Caught Anything?

Jeremiah 45-47; Psalms 105; John 21

“‘I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize it was Jesus. He called out to them, ‘Friends, haven’t you any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered. He said, ‘Throw your nets on the right side of the boat and you will find some. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

John 21:3-6

If our lives and ministries are not fruitful and we “haven’t any fish”, it is not ‘okay’. Jesus is asking us whether our methods and investment of time are fruitful. Jesus had taught his disciples to ‘catch’ men with the Gospel. However, their discouragement at his death would not be overcome until they received the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Without the inspiration and guidance of Jesus through the Holy Spirit, we, too, become discouraged and lack fruitfulness.  We were called to ‘catch’ men, not put in time to collect paychecks.

Have you caught anything lately?

“Lord Jesus, you alone have the words of eternal life. My hope is in you, for your glory.”
