Servant Leadership

Matthew 20-22

“…’Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom…’You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:21, 25-28

The paradigm of servant-leadership didn’t make sense until Jesus, the Messiah, died willingly on a cross, in obedience to his Father’s salvation-plan. Servant-leadership is not just a good idea, in Christ’s kingdom it is the only way leadership is expressed. Many other ‘Christian’ kingdoms have been built, with other expressions of leadership, but Jesus said that by our fruit we are known.

Does the fruit of our leadership in the mission of God have the humility and perseverance as evidenced in Christ’s example?

Or does our ministry, family, business, or structure look more like a pyramid with many serving a few?

Is the mission-vision and organizational culture stronger than the personalities involved?

Christ’s kingdom continues to grow even though the leader has made himself less visible.

Could we say the same?

“Lord Jesus, you are my example of servant-leadership. Fill me with grace to lead like you, for your glory.”
