Watchmen Who Listen
Ezekiel 33-35, Revelation 18
“’Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.’…’My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words, but do not put them into practice.’”
Ezekiel 33:7, 31, 32
The Lord is still raising watchmen and watchwomen who hear his Word and who speak that Word. This Word must be digested in our lives before we share it with others. When the Word has not transformed the life of the watchman or watchwoman, those who listen can focus on the eloquence or even entertainment value of preaching rather than on hearing the voice of the Lord. Spiritual renewal comes through hearing, digesting, repenting, and applying God’s Word. The watchmen anticipated the coming of the Lord (Isaiah 52:7, 8) and proclaimed the good news because they knew the Word of the Lord is life and peace for those who apply it.
How are we responding to the Word?
“Lord Jesus, I desire to be faithful to you and your Word, for your glory.”
