Watch and Pray
Job 25: Mark 13-14
“’I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘today – yes, tonight –before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times!’ But Peter insisted emphatically, ‘Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.’ And all the others said the same thing…’Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The Spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’”
Mark 14:30, 31, 38
Peter denied Christ even though only hours before he had protested emphatically that would never happen. In our western post-Christian culture, we, too, can be tempted to deny Christ at the office, school, or community because of the social stigma of living for Christ and following his Word. Jesus’ counsel to Peter, and to us, is to “watch and pray.” Our body is weak, and our sinful nature craves indulgence, not death-to-self. Spending time each day in the presence of the Lord strengthens our spirit and our capacity to obey the Holy Spirit. Prayer is the language of heaven. Through prayer our heart’s eyes and ears are opened to seeing and hearing what God is doing.
Are we spiritually alert?
“Lord Jesus, I choose to watch and pray, for your glory.”
