Two Masters?
Ezra 5-6; Psalms 138; Luke 16
“’No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.’ The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, ‘You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.’”
Luke 16:13-15
Who we serve affects our thinking and shapes our values and choices. If we are serving our career or a company, that will shape our priorities. Others serve beauty and will sacrifice to achieve affirmation by others.
What master are we serving?
The Pharisees claimed to serve God, but were actually serving money. Jesus exposed their hearts and said that we can’t serve two masters at the same time. When we serve Jesus, he calls us to give up all other loves and make him our first love. Once we are his, money no longer has the same hold on us.
Are we comparing ourselves with others in terms of wealth, and in doing so justifying ourselves before God?
God knows our hearts and he wants wholeheartedly devotion.
“Lord Jesus, I offer all I have to you; I thank you for your provision and presence, for your glory.”
